I race better in the dark: Energizer 11K Night Race

I meant to update about this race a long time ago, almost 4 months ago actually. Things got away from me towards the end of last year but here's to a better semester!
I actually won a road race. No joke. It was fun but more so because I ran 10sec per mile faster for a distance twice as long as the race the week before. It was relaxed and I experienced that true love of running. And ti's hard not to have fun running in the dark with a head lamp.

A short list of the events leading up to the race. We randomly signed up for the race after the Vibha 5K. They were having a buy 1 entry, get a second one free. With registration came 2 head lamps and two tech tees. Nathan needs the lamps for the Texas Independence Relay in April so it all worked out.

Our goal pace for the run was 7min/miles. I was viewing it as a very hard and long temp run.
It was a dark race and there were a lot of people. We ended up running much faster because I'm competitive and it's hard to let someone stay in front of me without trying to pass them. This tendency ruined many easy run days in High School.  During the race, I could see we were nearing the front pack.  I started to count people and kept counting people.
Nathan kept picking up the pace too. So there we were passing people, getting closer and closer to the front pack.and Then I realized with about 2 miles to go, I could win. I was in 3rd place and we were catching up to them.
We rounded the last turn into the parking lot with about 1000m to go when I passed the last female. I was winning with less then 1000m left. So I started to move because anything under a mile is my specialty. I was made for that part of the race so there was no looking back.

The organizers  interviewed the top three finishers after the race. It was awkward.I'm not a fan of interviews, enough said.
The official time was 44:42 and based on the clock. Nathan's time was chip timed and 5s ahead of mine. Nice to see we could run that well without planning on it. Unfortunately it may have been the trigger event to my eventual health decline over the following few weeks from which I'm trying to bounce back.

More on this semester to come.

Oh , Guess what the the first place trophy was? A stuffed pink Energizer Bunny in all his glory.

Just keeping going and going!
